More Choices for Students and Parents

More Choices for Students and Parents

As a parent, you want the best education for your child – one that meets their individual learning needs and interests. Many British Columbia students are now attending schools they or their parents have selected specifically as the best choice for their education. That’s because effective September 2003, students can now attend any B.C. school they choose, space permitting.

Choosing a school involves examining many factors including:
  • your comfort level with the school, classrooms, teachers and administrators
  • school philosophy and approach to academic achievement, safety, homework, parental involvement, etc.
  • level of school pride felt by students, teachers and parents
  • school resources, maintenance and links to the community
  • curriculum and extracurricular programs

Visit the Achieve B.C. School Profile Tool to evaluate school performance. You’ll find an interactive search tool that provides profiles of all B.C. public schools including Foundation Skills Assessment results (Grades 4, 7 and 10) and satisfaction survey results from students, parents and teachers. Learn more about open boundaries and other changes to B.C.'s education system.

What’s more, many of the sectors expected to experience significant growth over the next 10 years will involve job opportunities for those with trades training – from cooks and servers in the hospitality sector to carpenters, roofers and others in the construction industry.

Government Adopts Task Force Recommendations to Improve Student Achievement

It takes everyone working together – including parents, teachers, students and administrators – to create a top-notch education system. With one of the top five education systems in the world, B.C. is already well on the way.

As part of the provincial government’s focus on improving student achievement, Premier Gordon Campbell recently announced a series of new initiatives based on the recommendations of the Student Achievement Task Force. They include:
  • Focus on early literacy
  • Province wide performance standards and assessments for reading, writing and math, as well as social responsibility and citizenship.
  • A web-based resource for parents and children to use at home.
  • Undertaking research in student achievement methodologies at the Centre for School Leadership and Learning at the University of British Columbia.
  • Creation of a virtual parent center to enhance parental involvement in schools.
  • Establishment of annual teacher fellowship awards recognizing excellence.
  • Introduction of school recognition awards.
